When you first meet Ben Cheyne, you would think he is your typical Aussie larrikin but when you ask him what he does for a living and says, “I Sew”, it always raises some eyebrows!

Ben’s wealth of knowledge spans over 30 years, being an industrial textile sewing machinist, manufacturing anything and everything using Shade Cloth, Canvas & PVC Vinyl products.  Combining this with his metal fabrication skills, he also fabricators all our steel work from the posts & lugs, wall/roof brackets and mounts, Ben has a hand in all facets of the project.

At a young age Ben grew up surrounded by sewing machines so it was inevitable he would now make a living behind a sewing machine.  This family man started his trade locally in Townsville with a canvas manufacturer making/repairing marques, tents and swags at a very young age of just 16, (in 1992).  At 21, he moved to Sydney where he gained greater experience in this field & found himself managing, designing and installing large waterproof shade structures on a residential & commercial scale all over Sydney.

Ben’s expertise and passion quickly progressed in this trade with a National Television appearance, working alongside Jamie Durie and Tara Dennis for a popular house and garden renovation show called Backyard Blitz.  This was a career highlight and memorable experience working on a total backyard makeover for a family in need.

fter a decade in Sydney, Ben & his wife Amanda decided to return back to Townsville where they both grew up, to raise a family and now have 3 sons.

Ben gained more valuable experience working all over North Queensland for a business specialising in fabricating and building Shade Structures from the ground up for government schools, childcare centres, council parks & major shopping car parks.

After parting company in 2015, Ben couldn’t put his passion in textile fabrication to rest after a lifetime full of knowledge in this unique trade.  He made the decision it was time to go out on his own and obtained the necessary qualifications for his trade, such as a Business Management Certificate and a QBCC license in building small structures to go with his Cert 3 in Textile Fabrication.

He has now proudly established this business called Cheyne Shades & Canvas and enjoys creating unique shade projects for a North Queensland lifestyle.

I absolutely love being my own boss, Ben says!  My ideas, creativity and imagination can now be explored in greater detail, there is no holding on our creativity.
